v1.0: The Design Thinking Approach

A letter from the founder

While the scientific rationale for Soma is incredibly strong, a lot of the early decisions were surprisingly personal. The choice of a lactose-free protein source, the not-too-sweet malty profile, the macro split: these weren’t made in a vacuum. They were made to solve for one specific person: me. I was tired of options that were inconsistent, time-consuming, and mentally draining to navigate. Food should feel like a power-up, not a speedbreaker.

In the process of building Soma beyond my own kitchen, I realised my problems weren’t unique. The “what do I eat that doesn’t slow me down?” question shows up for a lot of people living fast, demanding lives. So yes, Soma v1.0 has my fingerprints all over it but from here, I’m handing it to you.

That’s why I think of Soma as a design-thinking exercise in public. v1.0 is the starting hypothesis, not the final answer. Your feedback on what works, what doesn’t, what your day actually looks like, isn't a “nice to have”; it is the roadmap to making Soma its best version. The goal is to keep iterating the formulation so it becomes more useful, more efficient, and more broadly compatible with real lives and real bodies.

This is, quite intentionally, the worst version of Soma that will ever exist. Every batch from here should be smarter than the last: more dialed-in on performance, tolerance, taste, and convenience. If you’re trying Soma now, you’re not just a customer; you’re a co-designer who will play an active part in building it out with me.
